British police have confirmed that they are launching an investigation into Hollywood "elite" Harvey Weinstein following a series of allegations from victims in England.

The Tinseltown movie mogul is now being investigated by the Child Abuse and Sexual Offenses Command - the same police unit that investigated the world's most prolific pedophile and child killer, Jimmy Savile.

Scotland Yard said they are investigating Weinstein after allegations of sexual assault have been made against him.

The Met Police is reviewing a number of complaints including one sex attack that occurred in the 1980s which was passed to it by Merseyside Police yesterday.

One of the latest in a long line of accusations of sexual abuse against the multiple Oscar-winning film producer is from British actress Kate Beckinsale.

She said that he stripped naked and make sexual advances towards her when she was aged 17, at the Savoy Hotel in London, despite her telling him she needed to leave because she had school in the morning.

According to BBC, the Underworld star said on Instagram she was told to go to his room, where he "opened the door in his bathrobe".

"After declining alcohol and announcing that I had school in the morning I left, uneasy but unscathed."

"A few years later he asked me if he had tried anything with me in that first meeting. I realised he couldn't remember if he had assaulted me or not," she said.

The Daily Mail reports: A Met Police spokesman said this afternoon:

"We can confirm the Metropolitan Police Service was passed an allegation of sexual assault by Merseyside Police on Wednesday, 11 October.

"The allegation will be assessed by officers from the Child Abuse and Sexual Offences Command."

A spokesman for police in Liverpool said:

"Merseyside Police can confirm a report was received at 8.40am on Wednesday of an alleged sexual assault in the London area in the 1980s.

"The report has been referred to the Metropolitan Police."

The police investigation follows allegations of rape made by three women against the movie mogul in an article in the New Yorker and a string of sexual harassment allegations from women who worked with him, with model-turned-actress Cara Delevingne and Kate Beckinsale the latest stars to speak out.

The Met Police is not the only force examining sex abuse claims against Weinstein, with the New York Police Department announcing today they are taking a fresh look at potential sexual assault allegations against the producer.

NYPD spokesman Peter Donald said today that investigators are trying to determine whether there were any additional complaints involving Weinstein.

That includes reviewing police files to see if any women previously reported being assaulted or harassed by him.

So far, no filed complaints have been found, he said, other than one well-known case that prompted an investigation in 2015.

More than a dozen women - including actresses Angelina Jolie, Ashley Judd and Gwyneth Paltrow - have told The New York Times and The New Yorker magazine that Weinstein had sexually harassed or sexually assaulted them.

Weinstein was fired by The Weinstein Co, a studio he co-founded with his brother, on Sunday and said today that he "needed help".

Earlier, the disgraced producer told reporters "I'm not doing OK" but "we all make mistakes" as he was filmed for the first time since the scandal broke.

Weinstein appeared, dressed in a black T-shirt and scruffy jeans, leaving his daughter's house in Los Angeles.

Asked how he was, the producer said: "I'm trying my best... I'm not doing OK but I'm trying."

He added: "I gotta get help. You know what, we all make mistakes ... A second chance, I hope."

And he added: "I've always been loyal to you guys. Not like those f****** pricks that treat you like s***. I've been a good guy."

The producer, who is thought to be on his way to a rehab facility and whose wife has announced she is leaving him, was then driven away.

Weinstein's spokesman has previously said about other claims: "Any allegations of non-consensual sex are unequivocally denied."

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which hosts the Oscars, described the sexual abuse allegations against Weinstein as "repugnant" and "abhorrent" and said it would meet on Saturday to discuss any action to be taken.

Bafta also announced it had suspended his membership.

Over the last few years, we've heard mentions of "Hollywood moguls" that have been ruling over a cesspool of depravity and sexual abuse.

In the last year alone we've seen celebrities such as Brad Pitt, Robert Downey Jr, Elija Wood, Corey Feldman, and more attempt to warn the public about the dark side of Hollywood.

Now, the horrific culture of abuse they have built up is becoming exposed and their sickening crimes are slowly being revealed to the world.

These sexually abusing "elite" don't work alone, and with Weinstein now being publically hung out to dry, we should see more from his world soon tumble as the oligarchs are running out of places to hide.

This is just the beginning...
