Professor Peter Turchin has predicted that if the current social unrest continues it will result in the complete collapse of the world as we know it.

Turchin latest research reflects on Donald Trump’s election success and suggests the structural forces that brought about the current political crisis hasn't gone away.

Turchin also warns that by 2020 the instability will be so strong, the massively rich and poor divide it will instigate a 'breaking point'.

“But this is a science-based forecast, not a ‘prophecy’. It's based on solid social science.”

The Express reports: The professor at the University of Connecticut’s in the ecology and evolutionary biology department is a world-leading expert on biodynamics.

The research uses maths and science to predict historical events such as the rise and fall of empires and growth and death of religions.

Professor Turchin said as living standards fall and political parties in the US threaten to break apart, his model found “social instability and political violence would peak in the 2020s”.

But the scientist argues the collapse of society is not “inevitable”.

“Impersonal social forces bring us to the top; then comes the inevitable plunge. But the descent is not inevitable.

“Ours is the first society that can perceive how those forces operate, even if dimly.

“This means that we can avoid the worst – perhaps by switching to a less harrowing track, perhaps by redesigning the rollercoaster altogether.”
