Ancient Metal Found 2600 Year Old Shipwreck May Prove Atlantis Existed
'Orichalcum' ingot's discovered said to be from Atlantis
The lost city of Atlantis is a legend in league with El Dorado – the city of gold and the Arabian City Of Brass. Atlantis is lost amid folklore and legend, relegated to the realm of children’s bedtime stories.
Atlantis is the 'fictional' island that was inhabited by an ancient civilization, it was hailed as a utopia in modern literature. But the island sank to the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean after an unknown disaster where it drifted into legend.
However many scholars and theorists believe that the ancient city may have really existed and has been written out of history and turned into a legend. The Atlantis we know of today is a work of fiction devised by Plato around 330 B.C. Plato did not depict the people of Atlantis as peaceful, but as powerful warmongers.
Professor of archaeology Ken Feder summarizes the ancient story: "A technologically sophisticated but morally bankrupt evil empire — Atlantis — attempts world domination by force. The only thing standing in its way is a relatively small group of spiritually pure, morally principled and incorruptible people — the ancient Athenians. Overcoming overwhelming odds ... the Athenians are able to defeat their far more powerful adversary simply through the force of their spirit.'"
The story is in effect an ancient Star Wars plot, the age-old good versus evil story. The belief that the city may have actually existed would not come about for centuries. Writer Ignatius Donnelly in 1881 believed that it was an utopia and all the most important developments in the ancient world must have come from Atlantis. It is a fantastical take - one that again seems to be based more in the realm of fiction, yet the notion that the city existed has persisted. Many believe it also has strong connections to Aliens.
The location where Atlantis was said to have existed has been proven to be false as well - as scientists have searched using advanced oceanography and floor mapping, if that was not the final nail in the coffin Ken Feder added another one; "The geology is clear; there could have been no large land surface that then sank in the area where Plato places Atlantis. Together, modern archaeology and geology provide an unambiguous verdict: There was no Atlantic continent; there was no great civilization called Atlantis."
But a recent discovery has reignited the flame; a 2,600-year-old shipwreck has been discovered of the coats of Sicily, among the wreckage Marine archaeologists found 39 ingots of what they believe is 'orichalcum'. The mythical metal said to have been mined in Atlantis.
Sebastiano Tusa, Sicily's superintendent of the Sea Office said; "The wreck dates to the first half of the sixth century. It was found about 1,000 feet from Gela's coast at a depth of 10 feet. Nothing similar has ever been found. We knew of orichalcum from ancient texts and a few ornamental objects."
The ingots were analysed with X-ray fluorescence at TQ - Technologies for Quality by Dario Panetta. The ingots turned out to be an alloy made up of 75-80% copper, 15-20% zinc and small traces of lead, iron and nickel.
Tulsa added; "The finding confirms that about a century after its foundation in 689 B.C., Gela grew to become a wealthy city with artisan workshops specialized in the production of prized artefacts. It appears they are lumps of latone metal, an alloy of copper, zinc and lead."
The alloy’s existence has long been debated, in legend it was said to have been mined in Atlantis and covered the surface of Poseidon’s temple. Enrico Mattievich, a former physics professor at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, believes that the metal originates in the Chavin civilisation that developed in the Peruvian Andes in around 1,200 BC.
As with the original legend scholars and historians have conflicting opinions, the wild card in all of this is that of ancient alien civilisations on Earth. Erick von Daniken believes that thousands of years ago aliens made contact with humans and propelled us as a species into a new technological age. (Watch the documentary below.)
This alien contact has allegedly influenced the development of many ancient civilisations including the Egyptians - with the construction of the obelisks and pyramids. Other cultures that may have been visited include the Mayans and the Polynesian people who inhabited the Easter Islands.
The rational answer is most likely the correct one in this instance, but with so many strange and unexplained cases all over the world you just never know what may be true.
